Under wood, laminate & carpet floors

Underfloor Heating Fittingin East Lothian

Carbon film underfloor heating suits almost any floor you would want in a home: engineered wood, solid wood, laminate, carpet, luxury vinyl and cork. It is an electric element about 0.4mm thick, laid over insulation and under the floor you have chosen, and the whole build-up comes to around 7mm. In an older East Lothian house, where the doors were hung to the floor that is already there, that matters more than any other number on this page.

We supply and install across East Lothian. The survey is free: we measure the rooms, look at what the floor is built on, and confirm that the covering you want is approved by its manufacturer for use over heating. Our own Select Registered electrician makes the final connection and issues the certificate, so the electrical work is not subcontracted out and left for you to chase.

Underfloor Heating in Musselburgh

Much of Musselburgh is older housing with suspended timber floors, and those bring two questions to the front. The first is height: a floor that already sits close under the doors has little to give, which is why a 7mm build-up gets specified here far more often than a screeded system that would need 60mm or more and a joiner to rehang every door.

The second is heat going the wrong way. A timber floor over a ventilated void will lose warmth downward into that void unless the insulation beneath the film is continuous and properly lapped. We size the insulation as part of the quotation rather than treating it as an extra, because a heated floor over poor insulation costs more to run every day it is used.

Over that build-up we fit engineered wood, laminate, carpet, vinyl or cork. Each has a different maximum surface temperature set by its own manufacturer, and the thermostat is set to whichever applies to the floor going down.

You love warm underfloor heating. We love installing it.

How it goes in

Thin enough to forget it is there

Carbon film is a dry-lay system. There is no adhesive, no screed and no wet trades, so the floor goes back down the same day it comes up.

  • The element is around 0.4mm thick, so thresholds and door clearances stay where they are
  • Rated 130W/m² - enough to be the only heat source in a well-insulated room
  • Depron insulation below the film stops your heat disappearing into the subfloor
  • A PET vapour barrier above it protects the element and meets BS EN 60335-2-96
  • Not earthed, so it is for wood, laminate and carpet - never a bathroom

Who makes it

Our Manufacturing Partners

The floors that go over it come from manufacturers we buy from directly, so what you get is manufacturer-backed rather than whatever a merchant happens to hold.

Flexel

Scotland

Our heating manufacturer. The Ecofilm carbon element, the Depron insulation and the ECOMAX boards are all made here in Scotland rather than imported.

Kährs & Boen

Sweden & Norway

Engineered wood. Both build boards rated for use over underfloor heating, which is the part most engineered wood gets wrong.

Parador & Quickstep

Germany & Belgium

Laminate and luxury vinyl. Every range we stock from them is compatible with the film, so the two are never fighting each other.

Installation guidance

Underfloor Heating in North Berwick

Along the coast a good number of houses are used in bursts - weekends, holidays, part of the year - and that changes what a heating system needs to do. A film element warms the surface quickly because there is very little mass above it to heat through, so a room can be comfortable long before a wet system would have finished warming its screed.

That responsiveness is worth having where a house is not occupied continuously. It is not a claim about running costs, which depend on insulation, tariff and how the thermostat is used, but a floor that reaches temperature quickly need not be left running in anticipation.

Where a property is let out we usually specify a thermostat with a lock or a limit, so the floor cannot be pushed past the temperature its covering is rated for by someone unfamiliar with it.

Other East Lothian Areas We Cover

We install throughout East Lothian, including Tranent, Haddington, Dunbar, Prestonpans, Gullane and East Linton. The job is the same wherever the house is: a free survey, insulation sized to the room, the carbon film laid and protected with a vapour barrier, a floor sensor set into the build-up, and the connection made and certified by our own electrician.

Because we supply flooring as well as heating, a room having both can be specified as one build-up rather than two trades guessing at each other. The insulation, the film, the barrier above it and the floor on top all have to suit one another, and that is settled at the survey.

One thing we will not do is fit the Ecofilm element described on this site into a bathroom or other wet area. It is not earthed, and it is not approved for those rooms. If that is what you need, say so at the survey and we will tell you plainly rather than sell you the wrong thing.
