Under wood, laminate & carpet floors

Underfloor Heating Fittingin West Lothian

Carbon film underfloor heating goes under engineered wood, solid wood, laminate, carpet, luxury vinyl and cork. The element is around 0.4mm thick, it sits on insulation and under your chosen floor, and the finished build-up is roughly 7mm - low enough that doors and thresholds usually stay as they are.

We supply and install across West Lothian. Every job begins with a free survey: we measure, check what the floor is built on, and confirm the covering you want is approved by its manufacturer for use over heating. Our own Select Registered electrician makes the final connection and issues the certificate.

Underfloor Heating in Livingston

Most Livingston floors are concrete or screed, and a solid floor changes where the attention goes. Concrete is a large cold mass: without proper insulation between it and the heating element, a good share of the warmth you pay for goes downward into the slab instead of upward into the room. Insulation is therefore specified from the survey rather than offered as an upgrade.

A solid subfloor also has to be dry. Concrete gives up construction moisture for far longer than people expect, so we take a reading before quoting and specify a damp-proof membrane where the reading calls for one.

Where a room is being taken back to the slab anyway, adding heating at that point costs far less than returning to it later. Over the finished build-up we fit engineered wood, laminate, carpet, vinyl or cork, with the thermostat set to the surface temperature that covering's manufacturer specifies.

You love warm underfloor heating. We love installing it.

How it goes in

Thin enough to forget it is there

Carbon film is a dry-lay system. There is no adhesive, no screed and no wet trades, so the floor goes back down the same day it comes up.

  • The element is around 0.4mm thick, so thresholds and door clearances stay where they are
  • Rated 130W/m² - enough to be the only heat source in a well-insulated room
  • Depron insulation below the film stops your heat disappearing into the subfloor
  • A PET vapour barrier above it protects the element and meets BS EN 60335-2-96
  • Not earthed, so it is for wood, laminate and carpet - never a bathroom

Who makes it

Our Manufacturing Partners

The floors that go over it come from manufacturers we buy from directly, so what you get is manufacturer-backed rather than whatever a merchant happens to hold.

Flexel

Scotland

Our heating manufacturer. The Ecofilm carbon element, the Depron insulation and the ECOMAX boards are all made here in Scotland rather than imported.

Kährs & Boen

Sweden & Norway

Engineered wood. Both build boards rated for use over underfloor heating, which is the part most engineered wood gets wrong.

Parador & Quickstep

Germany & Belgium

Laminate and luxury vinyl. Every range we stock from them is compatible with the film, so the two are never fighting each other.

Installation guidance

Underfloor Heating in Bathgate

Bathgate has both kinds of property, and they pull in different directions. In the older stone-built houses the floors are usually suspended timber over a void, so the priorities are floor height and stopping heat escaping downward - the same considerations that apply in Musselburgh.

In the newer housing around the town it is the Livingston story: a solid subfloor, a moisture reading, and insulation sized properly before anything else is decided.

Either way the parts are the same. Insulation below, carbon film sized to the room rather than cut to fit, a polyester vapour barrier above it, a floor sensor reading the floor rather than the air, and a thermostat set to the limit for the covering going down.

Other West Lothian Areas We Cover

We install across West Lothian, including Broxburn, Uphall, Linlithgow, Armadale, Whitburn and East Calder. A free survey first, then insulation, film, vapour barrier, sensor and thermostat, with the electrical connection made and certified by our own electrician.

Because we supply the floor as well as the heating, a room having both done is specified as a single build-up. The layers have to suit each other, and that decision belongs at the survey rather than on the day of fitting.

The Ecofilm element described on this site is not earthed and is not suitable for bathrooms or other wet areas. We will say so at the survey rather than after the floor is down.
